Pets Are Not The Best Gifts For Easter

a cute bunnyEaster is only a few weeks away. You’re looking around trying to find one of the best gifts for Easter. You may be thinking that a pet is a great Easter gift for your little one. Possibly a cute little duck, chick or rabbit. Certainly owning a pet is a rewarding and joyful experience, but giving one as a gift is not a good idea. Giving a pet at a holiday like Easter might seem like a good idea when you’re standing at the pet store or SPCA looking at them, but history shows that the majority of the pets given during these times end up being neglected or returned to the SPCA. All of these types of pets, especially rabbits, require a great amount of care and attention, and all this can be expensive.

Rabbits seem to be the most popular pet gifts for Easter. They are small, cute and fuzzy. But they are also the most difficult to maintain. A rabbit can live for up to 12 years. During those 12 years it will need food, water bottles, wood shavings for bedding, fruit, special chews to keep their constantly growing teeth worn down and yearly veterinary care. Needless to say all these things can cost a lot. As well as the things that cost money, rabbits also need attention.

Think of a caring for a rabbit like you would a dog or a cat. They will need daily exercise, grooming and cage upkeep. You also cannot cuddle a rabbit like you would a dog or cat. Rabbits are wild animals. When you cuddle or hold the rabbit close, it brings on feelings of being caught by a predator. When that happens the rabbit may do everything in its power to escape. This includes trying to run by kicking its strong legs, which means a nasty scratch, or even biting.

Many pet stores and local SPCA facilities will not sell or let you adopt these types of pets during Easter. That is because of all the points I listed above. It just makes sense because of the number of animals that will end up back at the SPCA or will simply be mis-treated to the point of death. godiva chocolate bunny for easter
